How to Make a Transparent Signature PNG (Free)
Make a signature PNG with a transparent background in a minute, from a typed name, a drawing or a photo, then add it to Word, Google Docs or a PDF.

Quick answer
- Fastest way: type or draw your signature in the free online generator and click Download PNG; the file already has a transparent background and is cropped to the ink.
- From paper: photograph your signature on white paper, then remove the white background (for example with Preview on a Mac or the Scan option in Signature Maker).
- Always save as PNG, never JPG. JPG cannot store transparency, so you get a white box around the signature.
- In Word or Google Docs, insert the PNG as an image and set the text wrapping to "In front of text" to place it on the signature line.
A transparent signature PNG is an image of your signature with no background: only the ink. You can drop it on a contract, a letter or a form and the lines and text underneath stay visible, exactly like a real pen signature. Here is how to make one for free, three ways, and how to use it.
Why PNG, and why transparent?
- PNG is an image format that supports transparency (an alpha channel). JPG does not: a JPG signature always carries a solid background, usually white, which shows up as a white box over the document’s lines.
- Transparent means only the ink pixels are visible. The signature blends with any paper color or form field.
- Cropped tightly means the image has no big empty margins, so it is easy to position and resize.
Method 1: Type or draw it online (about a minute)
- Open the free signature generator.
- Type it: enter your name and choose one of 14 fonts. Or draw it: switch to Draw it and sign with your mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus.
- Choose black or ballpoint blue ink. Blue makes it obvious the signature is not part of the printed text.
- Click Download PNG.
The file is named after your signature, already transparent and cropped. It is rendered at high resolution (typed signatures at a 240 px font size, drawn ones on a 2,000 px wide canvas), so it stays sharp when printed. Nothing is uploaded; the image is made in your browser.
Method 2: From your signature on paper
If you want your real handwritten signature, you need to digitise it and remove the paper.
- Sign on clean white, unlined paper with a black felt-tip or gel pen. Thin ballpoint lines are harder to separate from the paper.
- Photograph it in even daylight, holding the phone directly above to avoid shadows. A document scanner (Notes on iPhone, Google Drive on Android) gives an even cleaner result. See how to scan your signature.
- Remove the background:
- Mac: open the photo in Preview, click the Markup button, choose Instant Alpha (the magic wand), drag across the white paper until it turns red, press Delete, then File → Export as PNG.
- Phone: the Signature Maker app’s Scan option lets you crop the signature and raise contrast and exposure until the paper disappears; long-press the saved signature to export it as an image.
- Any computer: an image editor’s “remove background” or “select color range” tool, then save as PNG.
Method 3: Draw it on a tablet
On an iPad or Android tablet with a stylus, open the generator in the browser, switch to Draw it, and sign as you would on paper. A stylus gives a natural pen-like line with thicker and thinner strokes.
How to use your signature PNG
Microsoft Word
- Insert → Pictures → This Device and choose the PNG.
- Select the image, open Wrap Text (Layout Options) and choose In Front of Text.
- Drag it onto the signature line and resize from a corner so it keeps its proportions.
Google Docs
- Insert → Image → Upload from computer.
- Click the image and choose In front of text in the toolbar under it.
- Position and resize it.
A PDF
- Mac: use Preview’s Sign tool, which can import a signature from the camera, or add the PNG as an image. See how to sign a PDF on Mac.
- iPhone or Android: the Signature Maker app places your signature on any page of a PDF and saves the signed file. See how to sign a PDF on iPhone and on Android.
An email signature
Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail all let you add an image to your email signature in their settings. Keep it small (about 200–300 px wide) so it does not dominate the email.
Keep your signature file safe
A signature image is easy to copy. Store it somewhere private, do not post it publicly, and only insert it in documents you are actually signing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my signature transparent for free?
Use the free signature generator: type or draw your signature and click Download PNG. The file already has a transparent background. For a paper signature, remove the white background with Preview’s Instant Alpha on a Mac, or with the Scan option in the Signature Maker app.
Why does my signature have a white box around it?
The image is probably a JPG, or a PNG that still contains the white paper. JPG cannot be transparent. Save the signature as a PNG with the background removed, or recreate it in a generator that exports transparent PNGs.
What size should a signature PNG be?
Make it at least 1,000 px wide so it stays sharp when printed, then scale it down in the document. On a printed page a signature is usually 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 in) wide.
Can I convert my signature to PNG on my phone?
Yes. Open the generator in your phone’s browser and download the PNG, or create your signature in the Signature Maker app and long-press it to export it as an image.
